Coupons & Discounts
Create promo codes, set limits, track usage in real time, and run smart discount campaigns
What are coupons on Tikxz?
Coupons are organizer-created discount codes that delegates enter at checkout to reduce their registration fee. You control the code name, discount type, value, how many people can use it, and for how long. Tikxz validates and applies the discount automatically at payment time — no manual intervention needed on your end.
Think of coupons as your main lever for early-bird promotions, ambassador incentives, partner discounts, and social media campaigns — all trackable in one place.
Creating a coupon — all fields explained
Navigate to Dashboard → Your MUN → Coupons → Create Coupon. Here's what every field does and why it matters:
- 1
Coupon Code — The string delegates type at checkout (e.g.
EARLY50,MUN2025,AMBASDR). Codes are case-insensitive, soEARLY50andearly50are treated identically. Keep it short, memorable, and typo-resistant. Avoid ambiguous characters like 0/O or 1/I/l. - 2
Discount Type — Choose Flat (₹) for a fixed rupee amount off (e.g. ₹200 off) or Percentage (%) for a proportional discount (e.g. 15% off). Percentage discounts work better when you have multiple fee tiers or might change the fee later, since they scale automatically.
- 3
Discount Value — The actual number: the rupee amount for Flat, or the percentage for Percentage type. For Percentage, entering 100 means free registration — which brings us to something important below.
- 4
Usage Limit (optional) — Maximum redemptions allowed before the coupon auto-deactivates. Leave blank for unlimited. Use this for early-bird codes ("first 30 delegates"), urgency campaigns, or ambassador-exclusive codes that should only go to a finite group.
- 5
Expiry Date (optional) — The coupon stops working at midnight on this date, regardless of how many uses remain. Combine with a usage limit for double-gated scarcity. An early-bird code with both an expiry and a usage cap is much more compelling than one with neither.
- 6
Click Create. The coupon is immediately live. There is no draft state — if you're not ready to launch it, don't click Create yet.
How delegates apply coupons at checkout
When a delegate reaches the payment page, they see a "Have a promo code?" field. They type the code (or it pre-fills automatically if they arrived via a Link Builder tracking link). The system validates the code instantly:
- Valid code — discount amount shown immediately, before payment is initiated.
- Expired code — clear error: "This coupon has expired."
- Exhausted code — clear error: "This coupon has reached its usage limit."
- Invalid/misspelled code — clear error: "Coupon not found."
- Disabled code — treated as invalid.
The delegate sees the original fee, the discount amount, and the final amount they'll pay — all before confirming payment. This transparency reduces checkout abandonment.
Tracking coupon usage in the dashboard
The Coupons table updates in real time — no refresh needed. Each row shows the full picture for that coupon:
| Column | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Total Uses | How many delegates have successfully paid using this code |
| Remaining Uses | Usage limit minus total uses (shows Unlimited if no cap set) |
| Status | Active, Disabled, Expired, or Exhausted |
| Discount Given | Total rupee value discounted across all redemptions |
The "Discount Given" column is particularly useful at the end of a campaign — it tells you exactly how much revenue you traded for registrations through this coupon.
Editing and disabling coupons
Once created, the coupon code string itself cannot be changed — this prevents confusion if delegates have already saved or shared it. What you can update:
- Expiry date — extend or shorten it at any time.
- Usage limit — increase or decrease the cap. Reducing it below current usage will immediately exhaust the coupon.
- Active / Disabled toggle — instantly pauses or resumes the coupon. Disabling is non-destructive; existing redemption records are preserved.
Bulk distribution strategies
The best coupon strategy depends on your goal. Here are the most effective approaches for MUN organizers:
| Strategy | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Ambassador-exclusive | Unique code per ambassador (e.g. RAHUL10) + 15% discount + usage limit | Tracking referrals + rewarding ambassadors |
| Early-bird | Single code + flat/% discount + expiry date + usage cap | Driving early registrations, creating urgency |
| Social media drop | Short code + 48-hr expiry + tight cap (e.g. 25 uses) | Instagram/WhatsApp story campaigns |
| Partner institution | Institution-specific code (e.g. IITMUN) + flat discount | Measuring inter-college reach, institutional deals |
| VIP / speaker | Long random code + 100% discount + usage limit = 1 | Complimentary registrations for guests/speakers |
For ambassador programs, combine a coupon with the Link Builder's Combo link type — this pre-fills both the ambassador tracking code and the discount coupon simultaneously, giving the ambassador attribution credit and the delegate an instant discount.
